The legend of the evil Servant Rupert is almost as old as the history of mankind. The servant became known as St. Nicholas's evil helper and was supposed to admonish all children to behave well in the run-up to Christmas. The tool of choice was the well-known rod.
Servant Rupert is feared with his long gray beard and dark eyes he always looked evil and wore a scary disguise. It was said that he also wanted to use the same disguise to drive away evil spirits.

At the side of the road he walks past a small Christmas fir tree - a lovely detail that is supposed to symbolize the origin of the Servant Rupert story in the winter time. He has the dreaded rod tucked under his arm.
