When I was growing up, the washing machine was a wringer washer. In other words, you stayed close by while the clothes washed. To get the rinse water out of the clothes, you could either wring them by hand( which the Hummel figurine shows so well). Or you could push a piece of clothing through the wringer. At my house, we used a stick to push them into the wringer. When I was about 5, I decided to push my doll clothes through the wringer with my hand! Not a good choice! My hand got pulled into the wringer and all of my screaming got my Mother to the machine rather quickly to release the wringer! Very scary! From then on, I wrung the clothes out much the same way as this little girl!!
